How to translate video captions, from Hindi to English and more

3 min readUpdated

Short answer

Open the short in Vireeli, go to the Captions tab and choose Translate. Pick the language to translate into and confirm. Each caption line is translated and stays timed to the moment you said it, while your voice, styling and cuts stay as they are. You can translate into 32 languages, Hinglish included.

When translated captions help

  • Reach a wider audience: a Hindi video with English captions can be followed by viewers who don't speak Hindi.
  • Post the same video for two audiences: export it with captions in one language, translate, and export again. Exporting again is free.
  • Help viewers learning a language, who like to read along in the language they know.

Translation changes the captions only. Your voice stays in the language you spoke; it isn't dubbed.

Translate captions, step by step

  1. 1Make sure the original captions are right first: fix any misheard words, because mistakes carry into the translation. See how to fix wrong words in auto captions.
  2. 2In the Captions tab, choose Translate.
  3. 3Under Translate into, pick the language. English is suggested, or Hindi if the video is already in English.
  4. 4Click Translate. When it's done, the captions show in the new language, with key words highlighted.
  5. 5Play the video to check it, then click Export.

Hindi to English, and Hindi to Hinglish

The two most common requests from Indian creators work the same way:

You haveYou wantDo this
A Hindi videoEnglish subtitles, so non-Hindi speakers can followTranscribe in Hindi, then Translate into English
Hindi captions in DevanagariThe same words in English lettersTranslate into Hinglish (Roman)
An English videoHindi subtitles for Indian viewersTranscribe in English, then Translate into Hindi or Hinglish (Roman)

Need the result as a subtitle file? After translating, download it as SRT from the Export window; it's timed to your video. For Hinglish straight from the start, pick Hinglish (Roman) as the speech language when you upload instead; see Hinglish captions.

Which languages you can translate into

Bengali, Chinese (Mandarin), Dutch, English, Filipino, French, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Hinglish (Roman), Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Malay, Malayalam, Marathi, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese.

Right-to-left languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Urdu) aren't translation targets yet, because captions can't lay right-to-left text out correctly yet. The full list of languages you can transcribe is in supported languages.

Get a better translation

  • Fix the source first. The translation is only as good as the captions it starts from.
  • Read it once before posting, especially names, slang and jokes, which don't always translate word for word. Click any word to change it.
  • Use fewer words per caption if the translated lines come out longer than the original; set it in the Style tab under Customize.
  • Hindi in English letters: pick Hinglish (Roman) as the target. See Hinglish captions.

Questions and answers

Does translating cost credits?

No. Translate is included with every video, like the other caption tools.

Can I show two languages at once?

Not in one video. Captions show one language at a time. Export one version per language instead; exporting again is free.

Can I get the translation as a subtitle file?

Yes. After translating, download SRT or VTT from the Export window. See how to download subtitle files.
