How to turn a landscape video into a vertical short

3 min readUpdated

Short answer

Upload the landscape video to Vireeli. The form spots that it's horizontal and asks which part to keep when cropping to 9:16: the left, centre or right. Vireeli crops it to a vertical 9:16 short, then adds captions, cuts and zooms as usual. Pick the side where the speaker is, so their face stays in frame.

Convert a landscape video, step by step

  1. 1Create an account, pick a plan and open New reel.
  2. 2Upload the horizontal video. When it's wider than it is tall, the form shows Landscape video: keep the left / center / right side when cropping to 9:16.
  3. 3Click the side where the speaker is. For a person in the middle of the shot, keep center.
  4. 4Pick the speech language and a caption style, then click Make my reel.
  5. 5Check the framing in the editor. If the wrong part was kept, upload the video again and pick another side.

How the crop works

A 9:16 frame is a tall slice of a 16:9 frame: about a third of its width. Vireeli keeps the full height of your video and cuts that slice from the side you chose, so the speaker fills the screen the way vertical video should. The crop stays in the same place for the whole video; it doesn't follow a person who walks across the frame.

Which side to keep

Your shotKeepWhy
You're in the middle of the framecenterThe usual framing for a talking video
You're on the left, with a screen or slide on the rightleftYour face matters more than the slide in a short
You're on the right, with space on the leftrightKeeps you in frame and drops the empty side
Two people side by sideThe side of whoever talks mostA 9:16 slice fits one person; post the other person's best part as a second short

Not sure? Pause your video on a typical moment and imagine a tall strip a third of the frame wide. Whatever falls outside it is what gets cut.

Film landscape video that crops well

  • Stay in one third of the frame. If you know the video will be cropped, stand in the middle (or clearly on one side) and don't move around much.
  • Record in 4K if your camera can. Cropping uses only a third of the width, so extra resolution keeps the short sharp.
  • Leave headroom. Zooms enlarge the picture further, so don't frame your face right at the top edge.
  • Keep text out of the edges. Slides or signs on the far side of the frame will be cut off.

Recording vertically on a phone in the first place always gives the best result: nothing is cropped, and the full sensor goes into the short.

After cropping: captions, cuts and zooms

Once the video is vertical it's edited like any other: captions word by word, pauses cut and zooms on key lines. See how to make your first short and video size and safe zones.

Questions and answers

Can I keep the whole landscape picture with bars or a blurred background?

No. Vireeli fills the 9:16 frame by cropping, which suits talking videos best. Shapes other than 9:16 aren't available.

Does Vireeli follow my face automatically?

No. The crop stays where you put it (left, centre or right) for the whole video, so choose the side you stay in.

Horizontal video ko vertical kaise banaye?

Upload the horizontal video to Vireeli. The form asks which side to keep (left, center or right) and crops it to vertical 9:16 for you, then adds captions and zooms. Download the vertical MP4 and post it as a Reel or Short.

Does a landscape video cost more?

No. You pay by the length of the video, not its shape.
