How to download captions as an SRT, VTT or TXT file

3 min readUpdated

Short answer

Open the short in Vireeli and click Export. Under the video download you'll find buttons for SRT, VTT and TXT, plus Copy subtitles. The files hold exactly the captions your video shows, with your fixes, and are timed to the edited video, cuts included. SRT works for YouTube and most video editors.

SRT, VTT or TXT: which one you need

FormatWhat it isUse it for
SRTNumbered captions with start and end times. The most widely supported subtitle format.YouTube, Facebook, CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve
VTT (WebVTT)Like SRT, made for web video players.Your own website or a web video player
TXTThe caption text with no times.Descriptions, blog posts, show notes, translations

All three are UTF-8 text files, so Hindi, Tamil and other scripts show correctly.

SRT vs VTT: what's the difference?

Both list each caption with the moment it appears and disappears, and both are plain text you can open in any editor. The differences are small:

SRTVTT
Time format00:00:01,250 (comma before milliseconds)00:00:01.250 (full stop)
First line of the fileThe first caption's number, 1The word WEBVTT
Supported byAlmost every video app and platformWeb players, YouTube and most modern tools

When in doubt, use SRT: it's the one every tool accepts. Choose VTT when a web player or developer asks for it.

Download subtitle files, step by step

  1. 1Fix any wrong words in the Captions tab first; the files are made from the captions as they are now. See how to fix wrong words in auto captions.
  2. 2Click Export at the top of the editor.
  3. 3Below the video, click SRT, VTT or TXT to download that file, or Copy subtitles to copy the text.

Upload an SRT file to YouTube

  1. 1Upload the exported MP4 to YouTube.
  2. 2In YouTube Studio, choose Subtitles from the left menu and pick the video.
  3. 3Click Add language and choose the language of the captions, then click Add under Subtitles.
  4. 4Choose Upload file, select With timing, then pick your SRT file and save.

YouTube's own guide has the details: Add subtitles & captions. Uploaded subtitles can be switched on or off by viewers, which is useful for longer videos. For Shorts, captions burned into the video are the usual choice, because they show on every device even with the sound off.

Use the captions in another video editor

Most editors, including CapCut, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, can import an SRT file as editable captions. Import the SRT together with the MP4 you exported from Vireeli, since the times match the edited video, not your raw recording.
