How to remove background noise from a video
Short answer
Open the short in Vireeli and go to the Audio tab. Switch on Remove background noise and pick a strength: Light, Standard or Max. Vireeli makes a cleaned copy of your voice track in the background; when it's ready the preview plays it, and you can switch it off at any time to hear the original. It's free.

Why sound matters more than picture
Viewers forgive a slightly soft or dark picture, but they swipe away from a voice they have to strain to hear. In a talking video, your voice carries the whole message, and background noise makes it tiring to listen to even when the words are clear.
- Clean sound sounds more confident. The same words feel more professional without a fan or traffic behind them.
- Captions come from your voice. The clearer the speech, the fewer words come out wrong.
- Music needs room. Background music only sits nicely under a clean voice; over a noisy one, it adds to the mess.
What noise removal can and can't fix
| Usually fixed well | Hard to fix |
|---|---|
| Steady hum from fans, AC and fridges | Music playing in the room |
| Traffic and street noise | Another person talking at the same time |
| Hiss from a cheap microphone | Strong echo in a large, empty room |
Noise removal works by keeping what sounds like a voice and turning down everything else. Steady sounds are the easiest to separate. Anything that sounds like speech or music is hard to remove without hurting your voice too, and sound that was distorted or cut off when it was recorded can't be restored.
Remove background noise, step by step
- 1Open the short and go to the Audio tab.
- 2Switch on Remove background noise. Standard is selected to start.
- 3Wait while the cleaned voice track is made; you can keep editing meanwhile.
- 4Play the video with headphones on. Switch the setting off and on to compare.
- 5If you still hear noise, choose Max. If your voice sounds thin or robotic, choose Light.
- 6Click Export. The download uses the cleaned audio while the switch is on.
Light, Standard or Max?
| Strength | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Light | The noise is faint and you want your voice to sound as natural as possible. |
| Standard | Most videos: clear improvement without changing how you sound. |
| Max | Loud, steady noise, like a busy road or a strong fan. Check your voice still sounds natural. |
Balance your voice and the music
The Original audio slider in the Audio tab sets how loud your voice track is. If you add music, set Lower music when I talk so the music drops under your voice; see how to add music to a video.
Record cleaner audio to begin with
- Hold the phone closer: halving the distance to your mouth makes your voice much louder than the room.
- Turn off fans and AC while you record, and close the window.
- Record in a room with soft things in it, like a bed, curtains or a sofa, to cut echo.
- A small clip-on microphone is the cheapest big upgrade for talking videos.
Cleaner audio also means more accurate captions; see how to fix wrong words in auto captions.
Questions and answers
Can I remove background noise from a video on my phone?
Yes. Vireeli runs in your phone's browser: upload the video, open it, go to the Audio tab and switch on Remove background noise. There's nothing to install.
Does noise removal cost credits?
No. It's free, up to 10 times an hour.
Can I go back to the original sound?
Yes. Switch Remove background noise off and the original audio plays again. The original is never changed.
Will it fix my captions too?
Cleaning the audio doesn't change captions that are already made. If noise caused wrong words, fix them in the Captions tab or use Optimize to transcribe again.
