Hooks for Reels and Shorts: examples and how to add one

3 min readUpdated

Short answer

In Vireeli, open the Hook & CTA tab. Type a short Hook text (up to 80 characters) or click More ideas for suggestions written from your video, then choose how it animates and where it sits. Below it, switch on the End card and add a call to action, such as "Follow for part 2", which shows over the last 2.5 seconds.

What a hook is and why it matters

The hook is the first line people see and hear. In a feed, viewers decide within a second or two whether to keep watching, so the opening has to promise something worth staying for. A hook title is that promise written on screen, so it works even with the sound off.

A Full edit writes a hook title for you from your transcript. You can keep it, rewrite it or remove it.

Add or change the hook title

  1. 1Open the short and go to the Hook & CTA tab.
  2. 2Type your Hook text, up to 80 characters. Leave it empty for no hook.
  3. 3Stuck? Click More ideas for a few hook titles written from what you actually say in the video, and click one to use it.
  4. 4Choose a Hook animation: Pop (big text springs in), Slide (drops in from the top), Typewriter (types in letter by letter) or None.
  5. 5Choose a Hook position: Top (above your face), Center (the usual spot) or Bottom (just above the captions).

Hook formulas that work for talking videos

A list with a number3 caption mistakes killing your views
  • Keep it under about eight words so it reads in a glance.
  • Make the hook and your first spoken sentence say the same thing.
  • Be specific: a number, a time or a result beats a vague promise.
  • Don't promise what the video doesn't deliver; viewers leave and don't come back.

Hook lines in Hindi and Hinglish

The same formulas work in Hindi. Written in English letters, they read the way your viewers type:

Ye galti mat karnaA mistake to avoid
Koi aapko ye nahi batayegaA secret or insider tip
Aapki reels pe views kyun nahi aa rahe?A question your viewer asks

Write the hook in the same script as your captions: Hinglish hooks with Hinglish captions, Devanagari with Hindi subtitles.

End on a call to action

The end card tells viewers what to do next. Switch End card on in the Hook & CTA tab and type a Call to action of up to 60 characters, like "Follow for part 2", "Comment GUIDE for the link" or "Save this for later". It shows over the last 2.5 seconds of the video.

Ask for one thing only. A follow, a save or a comment each help in different ways, but asking for all three at once tends to get none.

See why the edit looks the way it does

At the bottom of the Hook & CTA tab, Planner notes sum up what the automatic edit did: how many parts of the video it kept, how many seconds of pauses it removed, how many zoom points it placed and how many words it highlighted. Use them as a starting point, then change what you'd do differently. For the zooms, see how to add zoom effects.

Questions and answers

Reels me hook kaise lagaye?

Open the reel in Vireeli, go to the Hook & CTA tab and type your hook in Hook text, or click More ideas for suggestions. Pick an animation and a position, and the hook shows over the first seconds of the video.

Do AI hook ideas cost credits?

No. More ideas is free, like the other tools in the editor.

Can I remove the hook title?

Yes. Clear the Hook text, or set the hook animation to None.

Where should the hook sit if my face is at the top?

Choose Center or Bottom so the title doesn't cover your face, and keep it clear of the captions; see safe zones.
