How to add Hinglish captions to Reels and Shorts
Short answer
Upload your video to Vireeli and set Speech language to Hinglish (Roman). Vireeli transcribes the Hindi, then writes every Hindi word in English letters the way people type it ("hai", "nahi", "bahut accha"), without translating it. English words you say stay in English, and each word keeps its timing.

What Hinglish captions are
Hinglish captions show Hindi speech in Roman (English) letters instead of Devanagari. "मैं ठीक हूँ" becomes "main theek hoon". It's the spelling most Indian creators and their viewers type every day on Instagram, WhatsApp and YouTube, so it reads faster for many people than Devanagari does.
| Caption type | What viewers see | Pick this language |
|---|---|---|
| Hinglish (Roman) | aaj hum baat karenge | Hinglish (Roman) |
| Hindi (Devanagari) | आज हम बात करेंगे | Hindi |
| English translation | today we will talk | Hindi, then translate the captions into English |
Mixed speech is normal: most Hindi-speaking creators drop English words into every sentence. With Hinglish (Roman), the Hindi words are written in English letters and the English words are kept as they are, so a line like "yeh feature bahut useful hai" reads naturally.
Make Hinglish captions, step by step

- 6Click Export to download the MP4, or download the captions as an SRT file.
How Vireeli writes Hindi in English letters
Speech recognition writes Hindi in Devanagari. For Hinglish, an AI model then transliterates each Devanagari word on its own into the casual Roman spelling creators use. It never translates, never merges or splits words and never drops any, so every word keeps the exact timing it had, and the word-by-word highlight stays in sync with your voice.
- Words already in English letters, such as English words, names and numbers, are left unchanged.
- Words are lowercase, except names and words that were already capitalised.
- The Hindi full stop (।) becomes a normal full stop.
Fix spellings to match how you write
Hinglish has no single correct spelling: "accha", "acha" and "achha" are all common. If you prefer another spelling, click the word in the Captions tab and type it your way, or use Find & replace for a word that comes up often. Your channel's name and product names are worth checking every time.
If whole sentences look wrong, the audio may be noisy or the speech mostly in another language. Remove background noise in the Audio tab, or use Optimize in the Captions tab to transcribe the video again. More in how to fix wrong words in auto captions.
Caption tips for Hinglish reels
- Show 2 to 4 words at a time. Romanised Hindi words are longer than English ones, and short chunks are easier to read at a glance.
- Highlight the key word of each line in a second colour. Vireeli picks key words for you; change them by clicking a word.
- Keep captions out of the bottom fifth of the frame, where Instagram and YouTube put their buttons and your caption text. See safe zones.
- Use a bold style with an outline or a box so captions stay readable on busy backgrounds. Browse them in caption styles.
Questions and answers
Video me Hinglish caption kaise lagaye?
Upload the video to Vireeli, choose Hinglish (Roman) as the speech language and click Make my reel. Your Hindi is written in English letters, word by word, and you can download it as a video or an SRT file.
What's the difference between Hindi and Hinglish captions?
Both are made from Hindi speech. Hindi captions are written in Devanagari (आप कैसे हैं). Hinglish captions are written in English letters (aap kaise hain). The words are the same; only the script changes.
Does Hinglish translate my video into English?
No. It keeps your Hindi words and only changes the letters they're written in. To show an English translation instead, transcribe in Hindi and then use Translate.
Can I switch an existing video to Hinglish?
Yes. Choose Optimize in the Captions tab and pick Hinglish (Roman) to transcribe it again, or use Translate and pick Hinglish (Roman) as the target.
Does it work for other Indian languages?
Roman-script captions are made for Hindi. Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi and other Indian languages are transcribed in their own scripts. See supported languages.
