How to remove silence, pauses and bad takes from a video

3 min readUpdated

Short answer

Open the short in Vireeli and go to the Trim tab. Click Remove silences and choose a pace: Natural, Fast or Extra fast. Vireeli cuts every pause longer than that pace allows. Remove bad takes finds lines you repeated or restarted, and you can tap any word to cut it. Every cut can be put back.

Why cut pauses from short videos

On Reels, Shorts and TikTok, a second of nothing is when people swipe away. Cutting the gaps between sentences makes the same message shorter and keeps the energy up, which is why most talking-head creators edit this way. A raw take full of thinking pauses gets noticeably shorter without losing a single word.

Remove silences automatically

A Full edit already cuts the long pauses for you. To change how much is cut:

  1. 1Open the short and go to the Trim tab.
  2. 2Click Remove silences and pick a pace. A message tells you how many silences were cut and how much time that saved.
  3. 3Play it back. If it feels rushed, pick a calmer pace; if it still drags, pick a faster one.
  4. 4Changed your mind? Click Put silences back, or use Undo on the message.
PaceWhat it cutsGood for
NaturalPauses longer than 0.6 sCalm explainers and stories; keeps breathing room
FastPauses longer than 0.2 sMost talking videos; tight but still natural
Extra fastPauses longer than 0.1 sHigh-energy tips and hooks; almost no gaps

Remove bad takes and repeated lines

If you said a line, stumbled and said it again, Remove bad takes finds the false attempt and cuts it, keeping the take you finished. It reads the transcript with AI, so the video needs some speech (at least six words). If it finds nothing, it says so and leaves the video unchanged.

Cut any word or sentence by hand

  • Tap a word in the Trim tab to cut it from the video, sound and all. Tap it again to put it back.
  • Drag across words to cut several at once.
  • Cut a whole sentence with the button next to it, or put it back the same way.
  • Trim the start and end with the handles on the timeline, to drop the moment you reached for the camera.

Make the cuts feel smooth

Lots of cuts in a talking video can look like jumps. Zooms and transitions hide them: punch-in zooms on key lines, or a whip, fade or zoom at each cut. See how to add zoom effects to a video.

Questions and answers

Does removing silences cost credits?

No. Trimming, putting cuts back and exporting again are free once the video is made.

Can I undo all the cuts?

Yes. Put silences back restores the pauses, and cut words come back when you tap them. Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac) undoes the last change.

Do the captions and subtitle files follow my cuts?

Yes. Captions move with the video, and SRT and VTT downloads are timed to the cut version.

Can Vireeli remove "um" and "uh"?

Not automatically. If one shows up as a word in the Trim tab, tap it to cut it.
